Perimeter defense shines for Timberview
Mansfield Timberview won the regional championship in part because of a strong showing on defense against Canyon's motion offense and perimeter shooting. Starting guards Maegan Conwright, Keena Mays and Alysse Barlow, reserve guard Kristin Askew and starting post Cree Conner had the assignment of keeping up with Canyon outside. The Wolves got the job done, coach Candi Harvey said after the 44-30 victory Saturday.
"We had kind of gotten away from that the last couple of weeks," Harvey said. "But when we needed them to do it the most, they did it. They did everything we asked them. Hats off to Cree Conner. We asked her, a post player, to guard players on the perimeter, and she did it all day long. I can't say enough about the job that kid did."

North Crowley is headed back to the site of its 49-48 loss to Lubbock Coronado last season. The Panthers and Mustangs have scheduled their 5A Region I area-round game for 7 p.m. Friday at Abilene High School, where Coronado took the narrow victory last season. "We're a year more experienced," North Crowley coach Stephani Gray said. "We had six freshmen on the bench last year."
The Panthers are trying to work in Chelsea Jennings, who scored 16 points in last year's game but has missed seven weeks with a knee injury. But they are encouraged by their depth. "Defensively, we've got a pretty solid bench," Gray said. "Offensively, getting those kids a couple of extra shots here and there makes a difference."

North Crowley still hopeful on Jennings
North Crowley sophomore guard Chelsea Jennings is working her way back from a knee injury and wants to play, but coach Stephani Gray said she wants her player to take her time. "She's dying to get out there and play, and if you looked at her and didn't know she was injured, you wouldn't know," Gray said.
The Panthers have continued to play well without Jennings and a second injured player, Charity Collins, in part because of their depth. The Panthers have a deep bench, Gray said. One player who has helped in particular is sophomore guard Kiara Davis, who herself missed time because of a knee injury. Davis was hurt almost exactly a year ago and returned 11 games ago. "She's starting to find her groove after almost a year," Gray said.

Mansfield started the game on a 7-2 run, but Bowie responded with a big run that gave them a 9-8 lead after a quarter of play.

Aledo going strong behind Mittie
After starting the season 5-5, the Aledo Ladycats have strung together an impressive run. In fact, Aledo has gone 16-1 since that start, including an 8-1 District 6-4A record to sit atop the standings with Springtown.
The main reason for the improved success, according to Aledo coach Rusty Johnson, has been the emergence of junior point guard Logan Mittie, who has scored more than 30 points in half of the team’s district games.
“When she takes the floor, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone more knowledgeable,” Johnson said. “She understands spacing and everything like that. This is also really Logan’s first time to step into the spotlight.”
Mittie, the daughter of TCU women’s coach Jeff Mittie, had been in the background the past two years with Hannah Christian and Taylor Hays leading the team. Christian is now playing at TCU, while Hays is at Lamar University.
“She’s really accepted that role and has just been outstanding,” Johnson said. “For her to do what she’s doing offensively and run the point position, that’s a credit to her work ability.”

Karli Mellegard finished with 13 points and sophomore Gionna Jackson added 10 points for Saginaw, which held a three-point lead with 12 seconds left. The Lady Rough Riders entered the game shooting 70 percent from the free throw line as a team, but hit only 10 of 22 in the win. The win sets up a rematch with Springtown on Friday. Springtown (21-5, 7-1) defeated Saginaw (22-5, 7-1) 65-46 on Dec. 18.
“First and for most give hats off to Boswell,” Saginaw coach Marty Garcia said. “They did an extremely good job of doing what they needed to do to stay in the ball game. They did a real good job of limiting how many offensive posessions we got. It’s no secret when we score and we can set up our press, but when you don’t score baskets it makes it hard to do that.”

Weatherford ready for North Crowley rematch
Weatherford coach Mike Miller believes the District 3-5A title is on the line when his Lady Roos (18-6, 5-1) take on North Crowley (19-6, 6-0) on Tuesday night. After all, both are the top two teams in the district and Weatherford’s lone district loss this season came to North Crowley, a 64-54 defeat on Dec. 15.
“We feel like it’s for the championship and we feel we can do things better than the first time we played them,” Miller said. “We feel prepared and have confidence going in. That being said, I don’t think it’s a make or break game.”
Miller said the key for his team to succeed will be to control the pace of the game. North Crowley tries to speed its opponents up and capitalize with several transition baskets. Weatherford, on the other hand, will try and slow the game down and make it more of a half-court battle.
“We have to change gears,” Miller said. “My feeling is that we need to do something that they’re not comfortable with and that means to change gears and execute. I don’t want to go out there athlete on athlete because I think we might lose. We’re going to try and play it smart.”

Big week for Big 3 in 4-5A
The more Arlington Bowie, Mansfield Summit and Arlington Martin come out victorious the more congested and exciting it’s going to make this race for the district crown, which all three teams currently have a piece of with 5-1 records.
All three teams are in a groove right now with three weeks left before a champion is crowned. This week will go a long way in determining which team is left standing.
Bowie (22-5) has won four straight district games since Summit beat them by 10 on Dec. 18. The Lady Volunteers will face Arlington Sam Houston Tuesday before they get a shot at revenge on Friday at 6 p.m. Summit and Martin will face each other for the second time on Tuesday. The Lady Warriors handed the defending state champions their only district loss on Dec. 15 (50-45).

Summit 73, Sam Houston 24 (F)
Three out of four isn't that bad.
And for the Lady Jaguars on Friday night, that meant defense. For the first three quarters, Summit (19-7, 5-1 in District 4-5A) held Sam Houston (11-15, 1-5) to just four points in each stanza.
"That is what we are trying to focus on. We want to get to get better in every game, and in that first half we just wanted to focus on adjusting the defense and being more physical," said Summit coach Tammy Lusinger. "We want to get better every game, and that's what we are working hard to do."
Summit's pressure defense gave them the jump in the first quarter, and they didn't look back.
Summit's Taylor Hooker led all scorers with 21 points.

Three tied at top of 4-5A
Time’s a ticking and there is still a lot to figure out in District 4-5A before the playoffs start in mid February. Ready? Reigning state champion Mansfield Summit (4-1) currently hold the tie-breaker over Arlington Bowie (4-1) at the top of the standings because of its 52-42 heads up win on Dec. 18. The two will play for the second time on Jan. 22.
Bowie’s narrow 48-47 victory over Arlington Martin, which also sits at 4-1, on Jan. 2 gives it the edge over the Lady Warriors, who handed Summit its lone district loss on Dec. 15 (50-45). Keep an eye on Martin’s game with Summit on Jan. 19. The regular season ends on Feb. 9. Buckle up.

Lamar duo having success
Arlington Lamar’s Kristen Grant and Brianna Wilkerson are quietly putting together solid seasons despite the Lady Vikings’ limited success in District 4-5A. It should come as no surprise that Grant is averaging 16.7 points, which includes knocking down 24 3-pointers. She is rated as the No. 21 shooting guard in the country by ESPNU. The Texas A&M signee has also dished out 79 assists, swiped 76 steals and grabbed 140 rebounds. Wilkerson is averaging 9.8 points and has hit 27 treys for Lamar, which is 2-3 in one of the deeper districts in the area.

Senior guard Breanna Dorsey has scored in double digits in all three of those games and is averaging 11.7 points per game and four steals per contest.

Timberview 68, Seguin 45 (F)
What a difference a year makes.
At this time in 2009, Timberview and Seguin were at the top of the state rankings in Class 4A. And on Friday night, Mansfield Timberview proved why they are still on top.
The Lady Wolves stormed out to a monster lead in the first quarter, and never looked back. Timberview led 36-0 before Seguin scored with less than six seconds left in the quarter.
Timberview improved to 21-2, 5-0 in 8-4, while Seguin dropped to 8-14, 1-4.
"I thought our execution was outstanding in the first quarter on both ends. We shared the ball well, our shot selection was very good and it was a great mix of inside and out," said Timberview coach Candi Harvey. "I thought overall, we played a pretty great first half."
Timberview led 54-18 at the break.
Maegan Conwright led Timberview with 14 points, and Seguin'sVeronica Azubuike had 21 points in the loss.

"Adversity" now in Bowie's vocabulary
One would think that the saying “adversity builds character” wouldn’t have much to do with Arlington Bowie. Not until lately, at least, simply because the Lady Volunteers hadn’t faced too much on the court.
Heading into its Dec. 18 showdown with Mansfield Summit in the second game of District 4-5A play, Bowie had wracked up eight wins in a row and lost only once in 15 games. Then the tide started to shift away from the Lady Volunteers a bit. They lost that game to Summit 52-42, followed that up with a win over Coppell (52-43) before dropping a 58-51 game to Flower Mound Marcus. Then, on Jan. 2, Arlington Martin mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback and almost nipped Bowie in the rear in a one-point game.
There’s no denying Bowie has faced its share of adversity. Now, it will be intriguing to see how the Lady Volunteers respond. They’ll face a Mansfield squad on Jan. 8 that has opened 4-5A with two straight wins.

Grapevine, however, pulled it together in the extra periods and prevailed 77-68 in double-overtime.
“There wasn’t anything special at the end, we just hit some shots and made free throws,” Grapevine coach Steve Ganninger said. “It was good to see us win a close game, though. We usually don’t do too well in close games, so this was a good sign.”

Wyatt overcomes 21-point deficit
At halftime, it seemed, Fort Worth Wyatt had no chance of defeating Fort Worth Trimble Tech. After all, the Chaparrals trailed the Bulldogs, 40-17, and had committed 42 first-half turnovers.
But Wyatt coach Shaka Massey told her team that they simply needed to make good decisions in the second half. And, of course, Wyatt also needed to run a zone press to try and create Trimble Tech turnovers to overcome the big deficit.
Wyatt did both and escaped with a wild 63-62 victory. The Chaparrals improved to 3-2 in District 7-4A and were led by senior guard/ forward Briana Walker, who had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and junior post Lareecia Swiney, who finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Both Walker and Swiney missed the entire second quarter because of foul trouble.
“I had to put five rookies on the floor in the second quarter and that’s why we were down 21 at half,” Massey said. “In the second half, we got out there and pressured the ball. We were able to create a lot of turnovers and capitalize on them.”

Birdville backcourt, defense impressive
Junior guard Chelsea Davis and senior guard Sarah Yeakley have formed a solid backcourt for Birdville, helping the team win eight of its last nine games, including the Lady Hawks 64-20 victory over White Settlement Brewer on Tuesday night.
Davis scored a team-high 16 points, while Yeakley added six. Yeakley, though, averaged 11 points the previous five games.
“You know, everyone is doing a fairly good job and of course the backcourt has been good,” first-year coach Kenny Yates said. “I’m proud of them and how well this team has played. I believe its the best start in school history.”
In his first year, Yates has focused on getting Birdville to play a pressure, man-to-man defense, along with some trap. On offense, Yates said the team is continuing to work on their half-court sets.
“We want to get out and run the ball when we get the opportunity and get it out in the passing lanes,” Yates said.

The player of the year for Stephenville so far has been senior wing Brianna Bledsoe, who has averaged 22 points this season.
