Mansfield in tight spot
Mansfield coach Judith McGill said her team "is in a pickle" right now as they fight for a playoff spot.
The Lady Tigers (23-11, 5-4 in 4-5A) coach Judith McGill said her team has to win two out of their last three matches to have a shot at the playoffs.
And unfortunately for them, these three final matches are against Martin, Lamar and Arlington, all teams Mansfield lost to in the first round of district play.
But fortunately for the Lady Tigers, the matches against Martin and Lamar both come at home, before they end their regular season on the road against Arlington.
"We took Martin and Arlington to five games the first time, we just coudn't pull out the win," McGill said. "The kids have a good attitude, but we have a long road ahead."

Azle making late season adjustments
The Lady Hornets are in the thick of the playoff hunt in 6-4A as they are currently tied for fourth with Springtown.
Azle (23-13, 6-5 in 6-4A) just swept Mineral Wells and Boswell at home before a crucial match at district-leader Birdville.
"We're practicing really hard for our game against Birdville," senior outside hitter Sara Wareseack said. "Right now we are in the running for a playoff spot and that is very important to me in my last season."
A playoff berth is a real possibility after the changes coach Melissa Scogin made to her team after the first round of district play.
"Offensively I've changed things up and we have a new rotation," Scogin said. "Our hitters and setters are connecting well. We are finding our middles and minimizing our mistakes."

Keller Central takes care of Justin Northwest
The Keller Central Lady Chargers moved one step closer to winning the District 5-5A championship Tuesday night by eliminating Justin Northwest from title contention.
The Lady Chargers (28-8, 10-0 in 5-5A) downed the Lady Texans 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, but Northwest still has a shot at one of the other three playoff berths. Two weeks remain in the regular season.
"We really try to focus on what we do," Central coach Christina Rudiger said. "We know that if we take care of things on our side of the ball we are going to reach our goals. We know we have to come out every night because people are fighting for their lives."

Grace Prep state ranked
After going on the road to west Texas and beating Trinity Christian and Midland Christian, Grace Prep is (22-9, 8-2) and find themselves ranked in a state top 25 poll.
The Lady Lions are ranked No. 6 in
www.maxpreps.com's TAPPS 4A state top 25.
"I didn't notice that, but it only really matters what happens at the end," Grace Prep coach Sandy Kelm said. "It's good because it's a confirmation that we are a good team. And that we are capable of doing well."
Grace Prep is focusing more on what games they have left on their schedule rather than the games they have already won.
"We still have two more district games, both against teams that we lost to in the first round of district play," Kelm said. "We hope to come back and even the score."
While Kelm said this is a relatively young team with several juniors and three sophomores on the roster, two seniors are guiding this team to the playoffs.
"McKenzie Craig and Taylor Calverley are senior setters that we look to for a lot of leadership on the court," Kelm said.
Outside hitter Alexis Sackett is averaging 3.2 kills per game to lead the team.

Dunbar close to district title
Fort Worth Dunbar is (21-11, 13-0) and with five matches left, the Lady Wildcats are three wins away from clinching the 4-7A title.
"It's a great accomplishment," Dunbar coach Latoya Washington said of her team being undefeated in district. "We came into the year not knowing what to expect. We knew we would be a solid team, but we were not expecting to be undefeated."
While the Lady Wildcats only need three more wins to clinch the district title, Washington said she plans on winning all five.
Dunbar has only nine players on their roster, but Washington likes having a small team.
"I like having a small team because everybody knows their role," Washington said. "Nine is the perfect number. We do a lot of conditioning so they don't get tired, if I see their tired we will go back to the track."
Washington said she has gotten great games from Chelsea Prince, Jordan Parker and Shelby Wiliams in district play.
Because of these players, Washington thinks this team could ride this winning streak for a very long time.
"I have a lot of my confidence in my kids, so if they keep playing like this they can go as far as they want to go," Washington said. "I'm going to put that in their hands."

All Saints gets first win over FWCD

Arlington Seguin first to 30
After knocking off Granbury in straight sets Friday night, the Arlington Seguin Lady Cougars became the first area team to reach 30 victories.
“We had a great preseason to prepare for district,” coach Amanda Shingleton said. “I’m more thrilled about the 7-0. I knew we had the talent to do this, but you always question whether or not your team can put it together at the right time.”
Shingleton does not want to compare this team to last year’s, but the success from that squad is helping this team now.
“Every year the team is different, but I do think we have a lot of court experience, which is making a big difference,” Shingleton said. “We started a lot of juniors last year and that court experience has been big.”
Even though the Lady Cougars (30-5, 7-0 in 8-4A) swept district their first time through, Shingleton doesn’t want her team to solely rely on what they saw from their opponents earlier this year.
“In the first round you don’t know what to expect,” Shingleton said. “But the second round can be tough because you have both seen each other.”

Fort Worth Christian thinking playoffs
The word around campus was that it was going to be a rebuilding year at Fort Worth Christian.
It has been anything but, as first-year coach Kevin Anderson has led the Lady Cardinals (23-7-1, 9-1) to a No. 5 ranking in the Lone Star Christian Sports Network poll and a shot at the TAPPS District 4A-1 title.
“I was a little surprised because this was just my first year,” Anderson said. “People were whispering it will be a project, but once I met the players I knew we could do this.”
Anderson said it is good for the girls to get some recognition, but the ranking doesn’t matter to him.
“I just want to work with the kids and teach them about volleyball,” he said.
A big part of this success has been because of 6-foot-3 senior outside hitter Rosalyn Thorpe and sophomore setter Alex Taylor. Thorpe averages 3.48 kills per game and Taylor averages 7.49 assists per game.
“Rosalyn has been on varsity for three years and this year she has gotten really aggressive and used her size,” Anderson said. “Alex is only a sophomore, but she is our setter and plays every point of every game.”
With just four games left in the regular season, Anderson has some lofty expectations for how his rookie year will turn out.
“I see us winning district and making it pretty far in the playoffs,” Anderson said.
